Soap Reflection Written By:  Abby Chavez

I’ve been doing A LOT of research on the SOAP journaling method and every site I came across had the same principles:

  • Scripture:  Select a verse or verses that stuck out to you in your reading.
  • Observation:  What did you observe about the scripture that struck you. This can be one sentence or a whole book.
  • Application:  How can you apply the observation so that it affects your life today.
  • Prayer:  Write out a prayer to God based on what you just learned and ask him to help you apply this truth in your life.

To start the SOAP method, I had to really sit down, read and re-read Leslie’s Week 1 Lesson.  I had to carefully think about what the scripture was trying to tell ME.  I had to think about how to APPLY it to MY LIFE.  And most importantly, PRAY to God that He would help me along this journey.  Please know that everyone gains something different from it and that’s OK.

I will be the first to admit that prior to this amazing opportunity Leslie gave me, I have never done a bible study.  For those that have read my introduction or have seen my blog, know my story and my relationship (or lack thereof) with God.  My husband committed suicide almost 4 years ago and since then I have gone through every emotion possible.  I questioned whether God even EXISTED.

Like many of you, I questioned whether God really LOVED me AND if He did, WHY was I going through everything He was putting me through.  I had (and still have) a million questions, a million thoughts running through my mind, and don’t get me started on my feelings! 🙂 So I had to take this STEP by STEP.

Step 1:  Scripture

Which part of the Scripture stood out to ME?  When I read it, the following stood out to me:

Exodus 3:13 – Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?

You may pick out a different part of the scripture and that is perfectly fine!  There is no right or wrong answer here!  This is what personally stood out to ME 🙂

Step 2:  Observation

Everyone at one point or another has wondered who God is?  So WHO is He?  We know what we hear from others, what we learn from our churches, family, etc.  We know who God is based on what we read BUT how much TRUTH is in that?  Is what I’m hearing and seeing WHO He wants me to believe He is?  What exactly does He want me to believe?

I want to know who God is from HIM, not from what others think or say.  I want HIM to SPEAK to ME and tell me WHO HE IS.  I know that God wants me to KNOW Him because if He didn’t, I wouldn’t be here now with all you wonderful people.  He wants me to know that he EXISTS and that He LOVES me.  I want him to TELL me and SHOW me who He is.

Step 3:  Application

So how do I apply what I’ve learned so far in this?  I had to really think about this because I’ve never really applied what I read in the bible to my personal life.  How do I apply it to my life TODAY?  This is how I’ve decided to apply it to MY life TODAY:

I will study His word and TALK to him DIRECTLY.  Only by doing this will I get to KNOW Him and develop a personal relationship with Him.  This will help me feel closer to Him and understand what His plan for me is.

This is very important for me.  I am a very impatient person.  I want to know NOW what I can expect from life in the next week, month, etc.  They say, trust in God’s plan for you.  I haven’t learned how to just place blind faith in Him and trust that He has a plan for ME.  If I were honest to you and honest to myself, placing blind faith in God TERRIFIES me.  After losing all control when my husband died, I now have to be in control of EVERYTHING.  That is my problem.  I firmly believe that this is because I do not have a close relationship with Him.  I don’t KNOW him to understand that He has a plan for me and I need to learn to place my FAITH in Him.  This is how I will APPLY it to my life TODAY.

Step 4:  Prayer

To me, my prayer today was SIMPLE.  This is what I prayed:

“God, I ask that you stand beside me and guide me on this quest to discover and KNOW who YOU are.  Help me HEAR you and KNOW you.” – Amen.

It’s that simple.  Prayer, as I have learned, does not have to be elaborate.  Speak from your HEART.  Talk to God and tell Him your fears, your reservations, your joys.  All of it.  He HEARS us even when we think He doesn’t.

As promised, here is a picture of what my SOAP journal looks like for this lesson:
I am learning that this SOAP method of studying the bible is a GREAT way to really sit down and THINK about what we read.  I hope that you will gain as much from this as I am hoping to do.  I can’t wait to see your SOAP journals and what you LEARN from this bible study!!  I really am EXCITED to be taking this journey with all of you!!
