Lesson 6 SOAP Journaling Method

For along as I can remember, I’ve known about the 10 commandments and what they were.  What I remember is not so much what the 10 commandments were but what would happen if we didn’t obey them.  So that is why I chose the scripture I did and took my SOAP in the following direction:

Step 1:  Scripture

The scripture that stood out to me in this lesson:

Exodus 20:5-6 – You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those[b] who love me and obey my commands.

Step 2:  Observation

Like I mentioned in the intro, I had heard of the 10 commandments but all I remember about them was what would happen if we didn’t obey them.  I was always taught at a young age that if I didn’t obey God or follow the 10 commandments, then I would go straight to hell and not be forgiven for my sins.  That’s a scary thought for a 10 year old!

Everything I did, whether it was good or bad, all I could think about was “will I go to hell for this?”  It’s a thought that I don’t believe any child should have to have.  A child should know that God loves them unconditionally.  That children should be taught the meaning behind each of these commandments to fully understand why they are so important.  I believe that children should not be scared into ONLY believing that if they disobey, they will be punished.

This just reaffirms my desire to want to continue learning God’s word so that I can fully understand the story and meanings behind it.  I want to learn as much as I possibly can so that I can be sure to be teaching my girls the right information.  I don’t want them to be terrified of the 10 commandments, I want them to use them as guidelines for how live life.

Step 3:  Application

I want to really use this lesson as a way to teach to the girls that there is a beautiful meaning behind the 10 commandments.  The girls (and all kids for that matter) should know this story so that the kids can learn that there isn’t anything scary about the commandments.  It’s really just God’s love for us and it’s a way for them to see that it’s never too late to seek God’s love.

Step 4:  Prayer

Lord, I ask that you continue to show me your love so that I may be able to teach my girls about your love that is shown throughout the Bible.  Amen.
